Free Food Scraps Collection at our Wednesday Market

About the program
In an effort to reduce food waste, the Dane County Farmers’ Market has partnered with Green Box Compost to provide a food scraps collection pilot program at our Wednesday Market every week through the end of October. 

Program Collection Dates & Times:
Wednesdays, June - October 2024
8:30am - 1pm
Located on the 200 block of MLK Jr. Blvd

How can I participate?
Visitors can drop off their food scraps for FREE at our Wednesday Market during the month of September. Look for the Green Box bins and signage next to the Information Booth! This program aimed at helping private residences access food scrap compost, commercial food waste will not be accepted.

How should I store my food scraps?
Any container can be used to hold your food scraps. Remember to remove any produce stickers, twist ties, or rubber bands.

Acceptable Items

  • raw fruits, vegetables, and nuts - including pits and seeds
  • eggshells
  • coffee grounds & loose leaf tea
  • grains & rice
  • flowers
  • houseplants
  • meat - including bones
  • cheese

Unacceptable Items

  • milk
  • oils/fats/grease
  • pet droppings
  • produce stickers
  • bandages
  • metal
  • liquids
  • twist ties
  • sanitary wipes
  • gum
